Elevate your mornings with this effortless French Toast Casserole. It encapsulates all the beloved elements of traditional French Toast, conveniently baked in a single pan!
8oz225g day-old French bread loaf, cubed (around 6 cups)
⅓cup75g unsalted butter
¾cup165g packed light brown sugar
4large eggs
1 ½cups355ml whole milk
1 ½teaspoon7ml pure vanilla extract
1 ¼teaspoonground cinnamondivided
1tablespoon12g light brown sugar for topping
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the ¾ cup brown sugar until fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Pour this into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
Arrange the cubed bread in an even layer over the brown sugar-butter mixture in the dish.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, and ¾ teaspoon of the cinnamon until fully combined. Pour this egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
Sprinkle the remaining ½ teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon brown sugar evenly over the top.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and puffed. Remove from oven and optionally dust with confectioners' sugar before serving.
Notes
Use day-old or lightly stale bread for the best absorption of the custard mixture.
For gluten-free, use your favorite gluten-free bread.
Replace butter with coconut oil or vegan butter for dairy-free.
Substitute milk with almond, oat, or coconut milk for dairy-free.
Let casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving for easier slicing.
Drizzle with maple syrup or dust with cinnamon sugar for extra indulgence.
